Background, Challenges and Objectives

Reducing environmental burden and making effective use of resources and energy through proper disposal of waste
(1) By 2030, substantially increase the share of renewables in the global energy mix.
(2) By 2030, improve sustainability through improvements in infrastructure and industrial performance by employing resources more efficiently and expanding the use of “clean” and environmentally friendly industrial processes.
(3) By 2030, substantially reduce the amount of waste generated by preventing the generation of waste at the source, along with initiatives to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Actions and Implementation

Yokohama City safely and efficiently incinerates all combustible waste generated within the city. The city operates four incineration plants continuously on a long-term, stable basis. We strive to properly manage the combustion, by having them incinerate waste at high temperatures (in the range of 800 – 950 degrees C) to curtail the derivation of dioxin, for example. In addition, the plant facilities reflect full consideration for environmental preservation so that they do not exert an adverse impact on the surrounding environment. More specifically, the plants are installed with high-performance exhaust gas treatment equipment for removal of hazardous substances such as hydrogen chloride, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, dust/soot, and dioxin. They also contain wastewater treatment facilities for purification of the plant wastewater. Furthermore, waste incineration residual heat is effectively utilized for power generation.
